Vonore
is located in Monroe County in the eastern part of the state, near Tellico Lake in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Tellico Lake is a reservoir on the Little Tennessee River, situated between the Cherokee National Forest and the Tennessee River and offers a wide variety of recreational sports. Three beautiful 18-hole golf courses wind around the area, with great views of the lake and the distant mountain ranges. Other lake activities include fishing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, camping and more. Tellico Lake is also connected to Fort Loudon Lake and the mainstream of the Tennessee River by a canal, making it possible for long distance cruising. Lakeside parks and marinas dot the Vonore area. The Fort Loudon State Historical Area is situated at the south end of the reservoir, which is a 1,200-acre site that is the location of one of the earliest British forts on the western frontier, built in 1756. Nearby, the Cherokee National Forest has 189 miles of trails for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing, birdwatching and wildlife viewing and scenic drives. A short drive west takes you to the town of Sweetwater and The Lost Sea, America’s largest underwater lake that is part of the Craighead Caverns. The cities of Knoxville and Chattanooga are less than an hour away from Vonore, and other nearby attractions include Lookout Mountain, Rock City Gardens, Ruby Falls and the Cherohala Skyway.

The Knoxville Region in eastern Tennessee is in a temperate climate zone. The summers are always warm and humid and the winters are brief and mild. Spring arrives early and stays for a long time and is alive with dogwoods, azaleas and other beautiful flowers. The average annual temperature for the region is 60 degrees F. The average annual snowfall for the entire state is 12 inches, and with the mild climate, snow rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days. Severe weather is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes. Hailstorms occur maybe two or three times per year. Thunderstorms are common in late spring and summer.
