Knoxville is steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty, with something for everyone, making it a great family vacation destination. Tennessee’s third largest city, Knoxville is located in a broad valley near where the French Broad and Holston Rivers converge to form the Tennessee River. The Cumberland Mountains are to the northwest and the Great Smoky Mountains lie to the southeast. Seven lakes in the Knoxville area offer boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Knoxville and Knox County have over 5,000 acres of parks and recreation space, including 144 playgrounds, 103 tennis courts, 20 public golf courses and 14 greenways and walking trails. Top Knoxville attractions are the Knoxville Zoological Gardens, Ijams Nature Center and the Knoxville Zoo. Several special events are held in the city throughout the year such as the Dogwood Arts Festival in the spring, Hot Summer Nights and Festival on the 4th of July and Christmas in the City in December. If shopping is your pleasure, then you will enjoy Knoxville’s many shopping areas, antique stores and malls, including the Old City Historic District that offers boutiques, art galleries, unique gifts, clothing and crafts. Knoxville Weather & Climate

The Knoxville Region in eastern Tennessee is in a temperate climate zone. The summers are always warm and humid and the winters are brief and mild. Spring arrives early and stays for a long time and is alive with dogwoods, azaleas and other beautiful flowers. The average annual temperature for the region is 60 degrees F. The average annual snowfall for the entire state is 12 inches, and with the mild climate, snow rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days. Severe weather is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes. Hailstorms occur maybe two or three times per year. Thunderstorms are common in late spring and summer.
