Townsend is a quiet little town nestled along the Little River, just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Known as the “peaceful side of the Smokys,” Townsend offers excellent restaurants and hotels, cozy bed & breakfasts and mountain chalets, easy on the budget motels and motor inns, and gift and specialty shops where you can find anything from fine art to handmade wooden walking sticks. Townsend is also just 7 miles to the entrance of Cade’s Cove, a scenic and tranquil 11 mile loop around a valley that has several beautifully restored log homes and log structures. More than any other place, Cade’s Cove gives visitors a clear look at how life was lived here in the early 1800s. The Little River runs through the five-mile stretch of town in Townsend, and offers fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing. A lovely championship golf course is located at Laurel Valley in Townsend, and several stables near town provide horseback riding. Other points of interest are the Tuckaleechee Caverns, known for their onyx formations, high waterfalls and “big room.” Townsend is also home to the “Old Timers Day,” a large arts and crafts festival, and “Townsend Spring Festival,” which is the largest gathering of bluegrass and mountain pickers in East Tennessee.
