Wear Valley
is located in the Great Smoky Mountains, between Pigeon Forge and Townsend, just minutes from Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although this area has some of the most beautiful scenery in the region, it was not well known by visitors until recent years. Many people call it the “quiet side of the Smokies.” Peaceful homesteads and farmland abound with many lodging facilities and unique shops sprinkled in between and around the valley. It’s just seven miles to the resort towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, and about three miles to the nearest entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park, of course, offers unlimited recreational opportunities, such as hiking, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, tubing, white water rafting, camping, wildlife viewing and golf. Over nine million visitors come to the Smokies annually, making it America’s most visited national park. The lush forests, green valleys and misty mountains are a photographer’s dream. Wear Valley is also just minutes to Cades Cove, which is an 11-mile, one-way loop road that is often called an “open-air museum.” This peaceful, scenic drive takes visitors around historic log structures and homes that offer a look at how life was lived in the mountains in the mid-1800s. Other nearby attractions include Dollywood, the shops and art galleries of Gatlinburg and the 1830s Old Grist Mill in Pigeon Forge.

The Great Smoky Mountains, with its%u2019 tracts of old-growth forest and mountain ridges draped in a hazy-blue %u201Csmoky fog%u201D has a climate that varies greatly depending on the season and the elevation. Weather conditions within the National Park can change without notice, so visitors should be prepared for almost anything. Elevations in the park range from 800 feet to over 6,000 feet and topography affects local weather. Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Spring is often unpredictable and summer is hot and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations. Fall has warm days with cool nights and is the driest season. The first frost is usually in late September and winter is generally moderate, but more extreme conditions occur with increasing elevation.
