Douglas Lake
was constructed by damming up the French Broad River in 1943 for the purpose of flood control and hydroelectric power generation. Jefferson, Sevier, Hamblen, and Cocke Counties surround the lake, with the major towns of Sevierville, Dandridge, and White Pine also situated around Douglas Lake. The major tourist towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, as well as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, are located within a few miles of the lake. Douglas Lake (or Douglas Reservoir) has over 550 miles of shoreline and is 43.1 miles long, with a maximum depth of 140 feet. The French Broad River and Nolichucky River, both of which originate in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, feed the lake. Most of the shoreline on Douglas Lake is privately owned, and the TVA provides recreational facilities at Douglas Dam. Above the dam is a campground with hookups and showers, a picnic area, an all seasons boat ramp and a swimming beach. Douglas Lake is rated one of the top 10 in the country for Large Mouth Bass. Spring and fall are the best times to fish in Douglas Lake. Other area activities include hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

The eastern portion of Tennessee maintains a mild climate with four seasons. Summers are generally warm and humid. The Great Smoky Mountains dominates the eastern border of the state, with numerous peaks rising 4,000-6,000 above sea level. Extreme warm temperatures are rare in summer, but at times the high humidity levels makes it seem warmer than it is. Temperatures always range 10 %u2013 20 degrees cooler in the higher elevations. Fall is crisp and cool and the driest season of the year. Winters are mild and wet in Tennessee, and the mountainous eastern border of the state is the wettest part, with annual totals of up to 80 inches in the higher, well-exposed peaks. Snowfall averages around 12 inches and tends to not stay on the ground for long. Rain is common in the summer months, but can occur anytime of the year.
