Jonesborough
is the oldest town in Tennessee and serves as the county seat for Washington County. As of the 2000 census, Jonesborough had a population of 4,168. Founded in 1779, seventeen years before Tennessee became a state, the town was originally part of North Carolina. Jonesborough was one of the towns that attempted to create a new state called Franklin, named for Benjamin Franklin. The state of Franklin was never recognized by Congress, and in 1796, Jonesborough became the first town in the new state of Tennessee. Today, the community attracts a lot of tourists for its historical significance and for its unique National Storytelling Festival, which takes place each October. During the festival, large tents are pitched in parks around town and storytellers sit on stages to perform. The town also hosts Historic Jonesborough Days in July and free concerts are offered every Friday night from May through September. The town has preserved many of its old buildings and it was the first town in Tennessee to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jonesborough has had some pretty famous visitors and residents, including Andrew Jackson, who opened a law practice here in the late 1700s. During that time, he lived in a cabin belonging to Christopher Taylor, located about one mile outside of town. It has since been moved and reconstructed in the towns park.

Jonesborough Weather & Climate
The climate of the northeastern Tennessee mountains is temperate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year; as there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is quite variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Snow is minimal in Tennessee except in the higher mountain regions. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
