Hampton is a small town in the northeastern mountain region of the state, near the towns of Bristol and Elizabethton, and near the North Carolina border. It's located just 5.5 miles from the Pond Mountain Wilderness Area, and Watauga Lake, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to "get away from it all." The terrain in the Pond Mountain Wilderness Area is steep and rugged, with seven major streams and several cascading waterfalls. Spectacular Laurel Fork Gorge stands 100 to 200 feet above Laurel Fork Creek, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the area for about 6.5 miles. There are also several other hiking trails through the area. The tiny town of Hampton is surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest, just a few miles from Watauga Lake. This lake is one of the most scenic in the Tennessee River Watershed, and is the highest lake in the Tennessee River system, with an elevation of 1900 feet above sea level. Hiking, primitive camping, fishing and hunting are the main activities in the area around Hampton, and it's also one of best areas for a scenic drive. State Highways 67 and 321 follow the shoreline of Watauga Lake and provide views of the lake and surrounding forest, passing through peaceful farmlands and other rural communities.

Surrounding areas: Watauga Lake, Tennessee (5.8 mi), Roan Mountain, Tennessee (7.9 mi), Johnson City, Tennessee (11.6 mi), Butler, Tennessee (12.3 mi), Englewood, Tennessee (14.4 mi), Erwin, Tennessee (14.6 mi), Bluff City, Tennessee (15.5 mi)

Hampton Weather & Climate

The climate of the northeastern Tennessee mountains is temperate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year; as there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is quite variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Snow is minimal in Tennessee except in the higher mountain regions. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
