Erwin is a small town located in the heart of the Tennessee mountains, along the Appalachian Trail. It is the county seat of Unicoi County, and sits just southwest of Johnson City, near the Nolichucky River and within the Cherokee National Forest. Sportsman and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, river and stream fishing, biking, horseback riding, golf and just being in the great outdoors surrounding Erwin, where the fresh mountain air is crisp and clean! White water rafting is also very popular in the rivers around Erwin, where the season generally runs March through August. One of the most interesting places to visit in town is the Erwin National Fish Hatchery, which produces up to 13 million rainbow trout each year. All phases of the fish breeding operations can be seen September through March. There is also a picnic area on the grounds. The Unicoi County Heritage Museum is also located in Erwin. This museum is inside a 90-year-old frame house and has old-fashioned country store exhibits, Blue Ridge Pottery displays and railroad memorabilia. Be sure to tour some of America’s most scenic highways near Erwin, winding your way across country backroads, stopping along the way at antiques shops, pottery and arts and crafts shops. Erwin is also conveniently located in the tri-cities area of Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport, and is near the town of Jonesborough, a historic village filled with art galleries, unique shops and fine restaurants.
