Greeneville is Tennessee’s second oldest town, located northeast of Knoxville in eastern part of the state. This small rural town has one of the richest historical backgrounds of any town in the state. Named after Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene, Greeneville was also the home of the 17th President, Andrew Johnson. His home, tailor shop, a visitor center and national cemetery, where Johnson is buried, are open to the public. The town of Greeneville, in Greene County, is also the birthplace of Davy Crockett, which has become a State Historic Area. The town also served as the capital of the “Lost State of Franklin” in 1785-88. It is also the only town in the United States that pays tribute to both the Union and the Confederacy in its courthouse square! Greeneville sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is near the Nolichuckey River, which has hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, golf and excellent fishing at nearby Cherokee Lake. It is also just a short drive to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and all the tourist attractions in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
