Newport
is a small town that sits in the misty mountains of southeast Tennessee, at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Located just 36 miles from the Sugarlands Visitor Center for the Park, Newport is a quiet, convenient and affordable alternative for families visiting the Great Smoky Mountains. To begin with, Newport offers comfortable lodging and good family style restaurants, shopping and all the necessary amenities. Next, the scenic drive through the foothills from Newport to the Visitor Center is full of breathtaking mountain vistas, giving you plenty of photographic opportunities. Once at the Visitor Center, you can view history exhibits and attend an orientation program, or pick up information to take with you on your trip though the Park. You'll dive through the exciting towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and pass the Dollywood Entertainment Park. The Smokys offer unlimited opportunities for family fun and recreation, such as hiking, biking the 11 mile loop around Cade's Cove, fishing, horseback riding, white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking and hot air ballooning. There are several pro-designed golf courses near the town of Newport, and nearby Gatlinburg is home to the only downhill ski resort in Tennessee. In Newport, you are just a short drive to all the Smokys have to offer, yet far enough away to miss the noise and crowds of some of the other more visited towns.

The eastern portion of Tennessee maintains a mild climate with four seasons. Summers are generally warm and humid. The Great Smoky Mountains dominates the eastern border of the state, with numerous peaks rising 4,000-6,000 above sea level. Extreme warm temperatures are rare in summer, but at times the high humidity levels makes it seem warmer than it is. Temperatures always range 10 - 20 degrees cooler in the higher elevations. Fall is crisp and cool and the driest season of the year. Winters are mild and wet in Tennessee, and the mountainous eastern border of the state is the wettest part, with annual totals of up to 80 inches in the higher, well-exposed peaks. Snowfall averages around 12 inches and tends to not stay on the ground for long. Rain is common in the summer months, but can occur anytime of the year.
