Muddy Pond is a working Mennonite community, located on the Cumberland Plateau between Nashville and Knoxville. In Muddy Pond there is a blacksmith and leather shop, a bakery, and a general store and mercantile that offers home-canned and fresh goods, pottery, quilts and other handcrafted items. In October, the Mennonites harvest sugarcane and make molasses using a mule-drawn press and wood-fired furnace. The wood working shop in town offers handcrafted furniture and leather goods. Muddy Creek, on the Upper Cumberland Plateau is within easy driving distance of nine state parks and many public lakes and recreational areas, including the Cumberland Mountain State Park. Near the entrance to the park you’ll find the Cumberland Homesteads Tower and Museum, and across the street is an antique store and the Cumberland General Store. The store’s motto is “Goods in Endless Variety for Man and Beast,” and they offer such interesting items as beekeeping, soap making and vegetable canning supplies. The park also has hiking trails, boat rentals, camping and RV sites, nature programs and children’s activities. The Cumberland Plateau also claims to be the “golf capital of Tennessee,” with courses located at Fairfield Glade, Four Seasons, Lake Tansi Village, Renegade, River Run, Stonehenge and Crossville.

Muddy Pond Weather & Climate

Northeastern Tennessee has four distinct seasons with cold winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn can be varied and unpredictable with thunderstorms and strong winds. The general patterns of weather, however, are most affected by topography; the higher mountain regions tend to have milder summers and colder, more blustery winters. The mountainous eastern region is one of the wettest parts of the state. Most of the precipitation occurs in winter and early spring due to more frequent passage of large-scale, frontal storm systems over the region. A secondary maximum of precipitation occurs in midsummer with lots of shower and thunderstorm activity. Due to the relatively mild winter conditions, snow cover rarely stays on for more than a few days. Severe storms are relatively infrequent in the state.
