Monterey
is a small town located east of the town of Cookeville in the middle part of Tennessee. Set among the Upper Cumberland region of the state, Monterey has spectacular mountain scenery, clear lakes and streams, waterfalls and forested woodlands. There are nine state parks in this region, and the town of Monterey is just a short drive to two of them; Fall Creek Falls State Park and the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area. Here, you’ll find miles of hiking and biking trails, white water rafting, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, swimming, fishing, boating and camping. This center region of the state, where Monterey is located, is also known as the “Golf Capital of Tennessee,” with 14 area golf courses! Vast, rugged scenic wilderness areas along the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River provide outstanding opportunities for backpacking, and the unique rock formations and waterfalls are ideal for photography. Besides all of the outdoor activities, other things to see in Monterey include Wilson’s North American Wildlife Museum, and the historic Mennonite community of Muddy Pond where you can purchase homemade baked goods, arts and crafts, quilts and leather work. For culture, plan to take in a performance at the Cookeville Drama Center or the Cumberland County Playhouse in nearby Crossville. Rich in history, Monterey is near the authentically restored English village of Rugby, and Pall Mall, the birthplace of one of Tennessee’s greatest war heroes, Sergeant Alvin York.

Monterey Weather & Climate

South-Central Tennessee has a moderate four-season climate with warm, humid summers and mild, wet winters. Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. The higher elevations of the Smokies, Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains are generally cooler in the summer and colder, more blustery in the wintertime. Fall tends to be the dry season, due to the higher frequency of slow-moving high-pressure systems during this season. Average annual snowfall ranges from 4-6 inches in the south and west to over 10 inches in the east. Due to the mild winter conditions over most of the state, snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days. Severe storms, such as tornadoes, are very infrequent in Tennessee.
