Kingsport
is located along Interstate 181 in the northeastern part of the state. It is part of the tri-cities area of Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol and is nestled between the Appalachians and the Great Smoky Mountains. With breathtaking scenery and natural surroundings set along the banks of the Holston River, the city of Kingsport has much to offer in the way of outdoor recreation. Nearby Warriors Path State Park has a very popular golf course, hiking trails, swimming and fishing at Patrick Henry Lake, picnic areas with tables and grills and electrical hookups, and campsites. Nearby Bay’s Mountain Park is a 3,000 acre nature preserve that offers nature programs, 25 miles of hiking trails, a visitor center with a planetarium, barge trips, and a saltwater aquarium. Another point of interest in Kingsport is the Allandale Mansion. Often called Kingsport’s “White House,” this beautiful Georgian architecture style mansion was built in 1950 and features a grand curved wooden staircase, formal fireplaces in all the main rooms and a hipped roof. Filled with fine furnishings, art and antiques, it is often used as the setting for weddings and formal receptions. Out back is a restored barn used for less formal occasions such as dances and other special events. Kingsport is also home to the annual “Santa Train,” a train journey through the Appalachians where volunteers take tons of gifts, candy and toys to children in rural Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

The climate of the northeastern Tennessee mountains is temperate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year; as there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is quite variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Snow is minimal in Tennessee except in the higher mountain regions. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
