Benton is a small town located in Polk County, Tennessee in the southeast corner of the state. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,138. The town of Benton is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of the state, within the Cherokee National Forest. The Ocoee River, a tributary of the Hiwassee River, joins together in Polk County near the town of Benton. The Ocoee River was the site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater competition and offers incredible recreational opportunities. The river has three separate parts: The Upper Ocoee is the Olympic course, the Middle Ocoee is the site of commercial rafting and the Lower Ocoee (below Parksville Lake Dam) is great for lazy tubing. The Hiwassee River is a favorite place for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Other attractions near Benton include the Conasauga River and Lake Ocoee (or Parksville Lake,) located above the spectacular Parksville Dam. The area is also filled with hiking and biking trails, horseback riding and a railroad that takes visitors on a 50-mile round trip up the lower Hiwassee River gorge. In addition to outstanding outdoor recreation, the Benton area has historic sites and museums, antique shops and art galleries and great restaurants featuring delicious home cooking. Benton is also home to the Chilhowee Farmers Market (located at the Polk County Fairgrounds) and the gravesite of Cherokee maiden, Nancy Ward.

Benton Weather & Climate

Southeastern Tennessee has a temperate climate with four seasons. Winters are generally short and mild, and summers are warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the high mountain regions. Rain is common year round. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March with warmer weather and flowering trees and shrubs. Summer arrives full force in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Fall brings mild days and crisp evenings, along with brilliant foliage colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall color change. Severe weather, such as tornadoes or blizzards, is rare in the state of Tennessee.
