Watts Bar Lake is a reservoir located in Roane, Loudon, Meigs and Rhea Counties in east Tennessee on the Tennessee River. It was formed by the construction of the Watts Bay Dam by the TVA for flood control and power supply. Situated in the heart of the Tennessee River Valley, Watts Bar Lake covers 39,000 acres and has over 780 miles of shoreline for swimming, sunning, hiking and fishing, boating and water skiing. Boat docks and ramps are found throughout the area, and several area marinas provide 500 boat slips for large and small boats, houseboats, as well as providing supplies. There are unlimited coves and islands located around Watts Bar Lake that are perfect for exploration by boat or canoe. The lake is fed by three major rivers and six large creeks, so there’s an abundance of fresh water fish, like jumbo crappie, bluegill and large and smallmouth bass. Watts Bar Lake is especially nice for family vacations, with many cabins and cottages, campgrounds and sandy beaches nestled among the wooded shoreline. It’s also become a popular place among birdwatchers, where many water birds, including ospreys and herons, and bald eagles are regularly spotted. Several good restaurants are located nearby, and Watts Bar Lake is about an hour’s drive to Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, Rock City Gardens and Ruby Falls. A Jack Nicklaus golf course is less than an hour away.
