Rock Island is a town located in the northeastern portion of Warren County in central Tennessee. The community is named for a small island that existed before the erection of the Great Falls Dam, which is situated at the confluence of the Collins and Caney Fork Rivers. Rock Island is most notable for being home to Rock Island State Park. This beautiful forested park is dominated by the Great Falls of the Caney Fork River, which creates a fantastic limestone gorge. This gorge has scenic overlooks, waterfalls and clear, deep pools for fishing and exploring. The 883 acre park also contains a natural sand beach for swimming, has four spacious picnic areas, cabins and campsites for camping, hiking and more. Rock Island Park has become well known for kayaking or “playboating.” Below Great Falls Dam is a series of rapids with a constant, retentive “hole” that allows playboaters to ride the waves, spinning, rolling and honing their whitewater rafting skills. Special programs are also offered at Rock Island State Park on a weekly basis throughout the summer. Just a few of the many programs offered include interpretive hikes, pontoon boat tours, birdwalks, rock hops in the gorge, live animal shows, volleyball and horseshoes, a campfire program and much more.

Rock Island Weather & Climate

The highly varied topography has a significant impact on Tennessee%u2019s climate. The landscape varies from gently rolling lowlands in the west, rising to the Highland Rim enclosing the Central Basin and on up to the Cumberland Plateau which tracks northeast-southwest across the state in a belt 30-5- miles wide. The Great Smoky Mountains dominates the eastern portion of the state. The Cumberland Plateau Region averages 50-55 inches of precipitation each year, with the greatest in winter and early spring. Thunderstorm activity can be expected in summer. Average snowfall ranges from 4-6 inches in the south and west, and due to the relatively mild conditions, it rarely persists for more than a few days. Severe weather, such as tornadoes, is rare in Tennessee.
