Roan Mountain is a small village nestled at the base of the mountain by the same name, which towers 6,285 feet above the community. Located on the Tennessee-North Carolina border, an official “Tennessee Scenic Drive” runs right through the middle of the community, and Roan Mountain State Park is also located here. The State Park encompasses over 2,000 acres of southern Appalachian forest and ranges in elevations from 3,000 feet in the valley to 3,700 feet in the surrounding ridges. Visitors can hike along the creek beds, fish for trout in the pristine mountain streams, camp, swim and enjoy mountain music concerts. Park rangers and naturalists are in the park year round to provide educational programs for visitors. The Appalachian Trail can be accessed atop Roan Mountain at Carver’s Gap, just an eight-mile drive from the park. Roan Mountain is most well known for their beautiful Rhododendron Gardens located at the peak of the mountain, spread out over three natural areas that cover 600 acres. It’s the world’s largest display of blooming rhododendrons and thousands of people flock to the mountain at the peak bloom season in late June each year. For over fifty years, Roan Mountain has been the site of a Rhododendron Festival in June, usually held in the State Park, with traditional music, handmade arts and crafts, demonstrations and a variety of good food. Other area attractions include Watauga Lake, the Historic Covered Bridge in Elizabethon, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and the 1780 Carter Mansion, recognized to be the oldest frame house in Tennessee.

Roan Mountain Weather & Climate

North Carolina has the greatest range of altitude of any state east of the Mississippi River, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic coast to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Latitude accounts for climatic variations, as does soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal. Autumn is the driest season, and also sees the greatest drop-off of temperature in the month of October.
