Memphis
sits high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River in the southwest corner of the state. During its early days, Memphis was a stopping point along the Mississippi for showboats, and today it’s a city of nearly one million residents. Known as the “birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll,” many come to Memphis to visit Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. Visitors are taken on a tour of the Presley mansion, trophy room, and memorial garden where bouquets of flowers still arrive on a daily basis for the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” There are dozens of other things to see and do in Memphis, beginning with famous Beale Street, with its music clubs and restaurants, theater, museums and souvenir shops. Memphis is also home to Memphis State University and the popular Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium, the National Civil Rights Museum, Cotton Row and the Main Street Trolley. The Mississippi Riverfront has been beautifully redeveloped and contains the Mud Island Museum and the new 32-story Pyramid glass indoor sports arena. For outdoor recreation, Overton Park is a nice place to walk, jog, bike or play golf. The Lichterman Nature Center has a 10-acre lake and hiking trails, and the Memphis Botanic Gardens has 96 acres of woodlands, lakes and gardens. There are two state parks near Memphis, the Meeman-Shelby and T.O. Fuller State Park where you can find swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and golf.

Memphis Weather & Climate
Memphis and the surrounding region has a moist continental climate, which means it has four distinct seasons with cold winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn can be varied and unpredictable with severe weather, like thunderstorms and strong winds. Summers are very humid thanks to moisture encroaching from the Gulf of Mexico, even though the temperature rarely reaches extreme highs. The humidity makes it feel hotter than it actually is. Winters can be cold with temperatures occasionally dipping below freezing. Memphis averages 5.7 inches of snow a year. There is plenty of rain to keep the region green, with showers and thunderstorms occurring in spring and summer. However, Memphis has sun for 64 percent of its days, which actually adds up to more sunny days per year than in Miami.
