Chattanooga Weather & Climate

Southeastern Tennessee has a mild climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are usually warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the high mountains, and winters are mostly mild and wet. Rain is common year round. The principal source of moisture comes from the Gulf of Mexico to the south, which results in a gradual decrease of precipitation from south to north. In the Great Valley of Eastern Tennessee, annual precipitation rises from a minimum of 40 inches in the north (the driest part of the state due to shadowing effect of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau) to over 50 inches further south. The mountainous eastern border of the state is the wettest part. Severe weather is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes.
